The inset photo at right shows CreteÕs Safeway grocery store, which opened at the southwest corner of 12th and Main about 1940. The building facade has been redone and has been the home to City Bank and Trust Co. since 1969 when Safeway changed locations. The photo was taken around the holidays and shows a small retail building to the south, which no longer stands. In roughly the spot of the grocery store was the Sherman House/Old Homestead Saloon, a wood frame building, which stood until the late 1930s.
